OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography)

OCT creates images by use of special beams of light. This diagnostic system gives the doctor immediate access to images and analysis to see complete cross-sectional images of the retina, referencing over 1000 data points. The technology is much like ultrasonography, except that OCT uses light instead of sound to generate a contour map of the optic nerve, optic cup and the retinal nerve fiber. This is the first and only instrument that can "see" below the surface of the retina to examine the retinal layers. OCT provides detailed, x-ray-like images of structures affected by glaucoma and other abnormalities of the retina, including detached retina, diabetes, macular holes, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and pre/post cataract macula assessment. The scan takes only minutes to perform.
