The prescription you receive at the end of your exam is typically a prescription for eyeglasses only.
An accurate prescription for contact lenses can only be issued after a contact lens fitting, which involves several steps are taken not included in a routine eye exam:
- special measurements of the curvature of the front surface of your cornea
- evaluation of the tear film on the front of your eyes
- assessment of corneal health
- exam with trial lenses in place to assess fit
- education regarding guidelines for wearing and caring for lenses
